We started with the garlic bread and potato pancakes. For our entree we
pork medallions a la moutarde and the "Dracula", a pork chop
made hot with the addition of several styles of peppers. We had a bottle
of the Hungarian "Bull's Blood" to accompany the dinner. For
desert we tried the hand made apple strudel. The dinner at the Red Chateau
was a delightful dining adventure. My wife and I found the restaurant, a
vintage 1850's home, the soul of intimacy with perhaps only a dozen
tables. It was also a bit of a dining adventure; it is not on the main
strip in Niagara Falls but rather up the hill on Main Street in an area of
the city which has seen better days. We were, frankly, a little
disappointed with the other sad homes and businesses flanking the enticing
front of the Red Chateau. However, once inside we were warmly greeted by
the owner/chef/hostess, Jarm, who showed us to out table. As we discussed
the menu with Jarm she boasted a little bit about some of the compliments
she had received from other people including one customer who raved about
her garlic bread. I thought, "Astounding garlic bread? What can be so
wonderful about garlic bread?" Jarm's garlic bread is the best garlic
bread in the world. My wife and I also ordered an appetizer of potato
pancakes. I have had my share of potato pancakes in my day and felt I
could make a reasonable comparison with hers. Jarm's were augmented with
bits of smoked ham and texture was all a person could want from these
simple but delightful cakes. My experience wasn't as great as the people here. I have to admit that this restaurant is special because it's a very old vintage house. However, it's very dark and noisy if there're many people. I went there with my boyfriend and there was another table with 10 people. Although the owner was very nice, she seems to be unfamiliar with the wine list. After we placed our order, we had been waiting for 1 hour and 30 mins for our food to be arrived!! We almost fell asleep while waiting. The food was ok. I believe there are restaurants serve better food than this one. We has already dined at the "german" restaurant in town and were rather disappointed at how far their standards had fallen. So while driving around we spotted this GEM of Central European dining. My wife was born and raised in Czecho-Slovakia and said the food was the best she has ever had at reasonable prices. I hope this place catches on because places like this are hard to find. The owner herself gave us personal attention. I can't remember having a better restaurant experience. It was our third time at Red Chateau and the food seems to get better and better each time! We have enjoyed everything we have ever eaten there and we love the fact that dishes are made from scratch! Each dish was mouth watering and incredibly memorable! We also enjoy the nice atmosphere and decor of the restaurant. Jarmila is a FABULOUS/CREATIVE chef and a very charming hostess. She always makes you feel welcome and it is such a pleasure to be in her presence. Check out this restaurant, which in our minds, has the BEST food in town! It is a hidden gem for now, but we hope for not much longer! |
As entrees, we had the lamb served with bread dumplings and cabbage salad and the Salmon Gypsy made to my spice level preference. The salmon was served with green peppers and cherry tomatoes and rainbow garnish which consists of cabbage salad, marinated red and green peppers and purple cabbage salad. For dessert, we had the crepes filled with organic mulberry jam and the moka torte. It was our third time at Red Chateau and the food seems to get better and better each time! It is a hidden gem for now, but we hope for not much longer! First off, the place is located in a sketchy part of Niagara. There is no parking available so we had to park on the street. The lighting in the place was very dark and the music was very creepy. We were the only guests that night and after signing the guest book it appeared that we had been the only ones to have visited in nearly a week. The appetizers and dinner were pretty good; however the desserts that everyone bragged over actually tasted slightly freezer burned. When the menu states that desserts are made "from scratch daily" its hard to believe that with such a low number of guests that this is possible. I would only recommend visiting this place during the day and with a large group of people. The service was great b/c we were the only ones there and the chef was also the waitress. She was very kind and it was hard to say anything negative while we where there or to write it in her guest book. Just felt that other travelers should be aware that this place is not all that everyone one has made it sound to be. Had lunch at the Red Chateau and would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys good food and excellent service. All meals made from scratch with fresh ingredients. Desserts are absolutely the best. There is a pastry shop on the premises with delicious goodies that you can take home and enjoy. Try this restaurant once and you will be back. Prices are also very reasonable.
We need more restaurants like this in Niagara. My wife and I found the food in this European Restaurant to be excellent and reasonably priced. While small, the dining room is cosy with a pleasing ambience. The owner and Chef serves "made from scratch food" and provides attentive service. It is well worth a visit.
Celebrating our 14th wedding anniversary, Ruby and I were downright impressed with the decor, the service, and the food. The food! I saw the advertisement on the internet, looking for a French restaurant. We received what we were looking for. The pork tenderloins were superb! Very small-seats maybe 20 ppl elbow to elbow. Makes for noisy surroundings. Very overrated web reviews--beware its all hype. No water at table, bread charged per slice, no butter. Grisly thick schnitzel, overcooked tough, saurbratten. Must be a problem..sign in window looking for staff. Definitely not fine dining & we're extremely disappointed. |
